The best Music Festival in Europe – An experts opinion

azkena festival

Azkena Rock Festival! Pure rock’n roll since 2002!

azkena festival

I have been in hundreds of festivals over the past 20 years. I’ve seen my favorite bands – new and old ones. I’ve seen lousy bands playing excellent gigs and great bands playing ridiculous shows. Also, I’ve seen fights, ODs, police brutality, bad bouncers and people going crazy.

We can talk about total rip-offs (like Ruisrock festival in Finland). Those force you to buy expensive drinks and food with no options. Some festivals are violent, like the Finnish Messilä festival. One time, somebody burned my tent and hit my friend with a log to the forehead.

Dangerous madness in the Finnish midsummer night’s where the sun never sets. It sets with a log.

Festivals are gone really huge. Although I don’t like the big festivals in general, Roskilde in Denmark is a good one and cousy. Weather it is not perfect there, but that’s something you cannot choose or fix.azkena festival

As a festival addict, if I’d choose three best festivals in Europe – the choice would be easy. My main qualifications are price, atmosphere and music.

I hate to think about money, but there’s things called “tickets” or “entrance”. They’re also many tastes of atmosphere, but for me the most important thing in a good festival is the music.

Speedfest – Eindhoven, Netherlands

In Speedfest there were over 20 bands playing in at one night. It was also wisely organized, so you managed to see every band and style you wanted. The music line-up was always good and it variety was from country music to death metal. The entries were also cheap. But unfortunately the last ”rock ’n roll blast” was done in 2015. Nothing but good memories

Gutter Island – Vordingborg, Denmark

Gutter Island festival is very small, less than 1000 tickets available and the atmosphere is small (perfect, we hate big ones). The festival is organized every second year by volunteers. The Line-up is mainly garage rock with couple of bigger underground names like The Dictators in 2016.

Azkena Rock Festival (AFR), Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque country

But yeah!! Let’s go to the subject and to the best music festival in Europe.azkenamusic festival

Azkena is a very cool rock’n’roll celebration since 2002, with Mudhoney, Supersuckers, The Bellrays, no crap!! I try to sum up the history short and clear?

In the year 2006 over 44.000 sold tickets! On stage that year such as Iggy and The Stooges, Social Distortion, Bad Brains and from more mainstream Kiss and Alice Cooper. Every year some of best bands from underground rock, stoner, punk rock and traditional rock play there. If I would make a list of all the good bands during the years of ARF, the list would be longer than bible and 100% more credible. Street credible!!!

azkena festivalI’m really impressed how they build the line-up of bands. I mean, there’s couple of bigger good mainstream acts and when I say mainstream I don’t mean any crap from MTV today. I mean artist and bands like John Fogerty, Chris Isaak, The Cult and Cheap Trick, who will be headliners this year. The big thing for me on 2017 line-up is Union Carbide Productions. The Hellacopters played last year and they will play Azkena this summer as well. If you like pure rock’n roll music, it wont get any better!

About logistic and atmosphere.

azkena festivalARF is located near of Vitoria-Gasteiz center. I walked last time from the main bus station, maybe half hour to the festival area. The main railway station is even closer. It’s easy to find, one look on the map and you know where to go. Changing the ticket to wristband won’t take too long. Camping area is just around the corner and it’s very cheap.

Drink-wise there’s a lot of alcohol selling points and not too much standing in the lines – very useful – we love our drinks.. Same with food stands and yes – there’re vegan meals as well. If you smoke, take couple of packages with you. You cannot buy the poison from the festival area.

azkena festivalThere’re three stages and the line-up is scheduled well, so you cannot miss any band that you would want to see. Despite thousands of people, there’s enough space for everyone. People who come to ARF come for music and for having good time. I have not seen any fights or bad behavior. Ushers and other workers are very nice and helpful. If your issue is get too drunk and to act like an asshole, you should do it someplace else.

This festival is for real people and real music.

See you at Azkena in June 23 to 24!!

The FC Barcelona – Manchester United Legends Charity Game to play at Camp Nou!

Barça Legends – Manchester United Legends June 30 at the Camp Nou.

Sometimes we all get this “I wish I had lived back then…”, reasons just vary. Neo-hippies would time travel to Woodstock, history freaks to check the truth of the pyramids of Giza and every reasonable person would go to murder Hitler. But I’d go back to year 1994… to see the Dream Team.

The Dream Team was a creation of Johan Cryuff, legendary player, manager and influential person of Ajax, FC Barcelona and Holland national team. Cruyff came to manage FC Barcelona 1989 and made something special. Mixing of the Spanish and foreign stars was not only lethal on the pitch, but also stylish in a way that modern teams can only envy.

Cruyff created, collected and led the team, but the individual players made it. I’ll introduce some of them to you:

Johan Cruyff, The Coach and The Legend. As mentioned, Cruyff came to FC Barcelona in 1989 and he left the club in 1996. “El Salvador” has been maybe the most influential person in the whole history of FC Barcelona. He passed away 24th of March 2016.

Andoni Zubizarreta. The Basque goalkeeper played 8 years in Blaugrana shirt. Despite his 126 international matches, Zubi never was really fond of Spain or Spanish government. He used to hide the flag of Spain from his La Roja socks.

Ronald Koeman was one of the brightest stars of many Dutch players during the Dream Team era. Koeman scored the winning goal in the European Cup against Sampdoria at Wembley 1992. Unforgettable moment for any culé.

Michael Laudrup. The Great Dane was the maestro of the midfield. In 1990 Laudrup decided to end his international career after following the differences with Richard Moller Nielsen. Surprisingly Denmark won the European Championship without its brightest star.

Hristo Stoichkov. The Hero of Yours Truly. Stoichkov was aggressive, skillful and fast and he could play any attacking position. And he is here soon again!

It’s rumored that Barça Legends team would include players like Stoichkov, Vítor Baía, Edmílson, Popescu, Ronald de Boer and Mendieta. Manchester United is also still a mystery, but names like Paul Scholes , Dwight Yorke and Denis Irwin are mentioned.

And the “crack”? The new ambassador of FC Barcelona? Ronaldinho? Oh please let it be him!

The charity game will be played at June 30,  7.00pm CET and tickets can be purchased through the club website for between €10 and €21. The proceeds from this game will go entirely to the FC Barcelona Foundation.

Find the tickets in here.

What is the best band name never ever invented?

2
the best band name in history

I asked from my Facebook entourage about the best band name ever invented. The result was quite as I expected.

The Classic Names.

beatles
These hippies needed a haircut!

Oh, the good old times! In the past, naming the bands was so easy, because names weren’t taken. Today… Take a word or two, write those to Google and add “the band” to the search. Most likely you’ll get some “band” to the search results.

Rolling Stones. Well it does sound good and describes the Rock’n’Roll mammoth perfectly. They must have been made of stone and they are still rolling.

The Beatles. There was some argument after someone played the B-card. Is it amazingly dumb name or just incredibly genius one? The name also describes the band and the era very well. It is naïve but playful and definitely not too serious.

Motörhead. This is a wonderful name. And again it describes perfectly the content of the adrenalized speed-freak train. Motörhead was extremely LOUD.

The Doors. OK – the name was taken from the title of Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception – so you might say that name stands pretty well for the creepy hippie rock in the world of Charles Manson, LSD and freaky sex.

Sex Pistols. For this name I’m ambivalent. What the f..ck that even means? But at the time provocation was the purpose and the only purpose. Sex and guns – yes – there’s your provocation par excellence.

Never grow old!

mp
“Misantropic Painforest, and this is the most clearest black metal logo I’ve ever seen”

Subheading needs an explanation. People form the bands when they’re quite young – usually teenagers. That’s why we have names like this:

Cock and ball torture. German grindcore / death metal band with an extraordinary childish name. I don’t know if I need to giggle or judge this because I’m old. Band’s first EP name Cocktales (1998) must have been a blast when invented. There’s a reference to Ducktales, a children’s program from the 90’s.

Anal Cunt. Band of an American grind/HC legend Seth Putnam. Let’s see what else Seth put together:

Vaginal Jesus

Satan’s Warriors

Shit Scum

Full Blown a.i.d.s.

Cuntsaw

Adolf Satan

Really grown up, right? There must be thousands of bands as mature as the few examples above, and thousands still to come.

Free Entry. Free Entry toured with Free Beer. These guys must have had sooooooo much fun.

Misantropical Painforest. Personally, I almost pissed in my pants when I first heard the band’s name. This Finnish black metal project itself isn’t really matter of a laugh. Dark shit.

This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb, a folk punk band from Florida. They had an awfully long name that turned out to be really a good one. People had hysteric reactions to the band’s stickers on bikes. Funny, maybe – Childish, absolutely.

“And the winner is…”

First of all, this shouldn’t be a competition. But because I made this as a competition, a winner has to be announced…

The Velvet Underground. You can taste the sweet sin in the name, can’t you? Its Hypnotic and dangerous.

Propagandhi. Wordplay, which completely describes this Canadian peace-loving agitating punk group.

Suede. Another fabric related “perfect band name” from the time when bands needed to have just one word as a name. For me Oasis, Blur, Pulp or Verve are just words. Suede sounds just like Suede.

A Perfect Circle. In our universe there’re no perfect circles. So the name itself gives me a mathematic-philosophical trip. It is impressive from three words, no?

Slayer. Can you see the logo of Slayer front of your eyes? Can you hear “Angel of Death” in your head? The most powerful and the most descriptive band name. The winner.

Slayer among the others will play 01.06.2017 at Primavera Sound. The others groups with awesome name in Primavera Sound’s band list are:

Joy Orbison, Tired Lion, Bicep, Descendents, Run The Jewels, Swans, Diealright, Teenage Fanclub, Let’s Eat Grandma, Cymbals Eat Guitars, BadBadNotGood, Broken Social Scene, Astronaut Project, and much much more (this is not a band name. Seriously).

Some of the names mentioned above are Dj’s, obviously. Maybe it’s easier to give yourself a funny name than try to get acceptance from the others – who are too serious about the music.

Primavera Sound: 31st of May – 4th of Juny 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.

Institutional Advertising Money for Newspapers in Catalonia.

0
dirty money laundering

Which newspapers received the most of Catalan taxpayer’s Money?

The officially published figures show that last year the Government of Catalonia or Generalitat de Catalunya spent more than 12.3 million euros for institutional advertising in the Catalan newspapers.

According to the government spokesman, Neus Munté, there are 26 media outlets that received institutional aid through “advertising contracts”.freedom for catalonia

The winners and losers.

The jackpot price winners received the highest amounts of money. These include El Periódico (3,892,898 euros), El Punt Avui (2,354,319 euros), La Vanguardia (2,239,826 euros) and Ara (1,280,259 euros).

The second price category landed to 20 minutes (338,117 euros), Segre (272,143 euros), Més Tarragona (169,864 euros), Diari de Tarragona (137,490 euros), El País (133.042), Regió7 (125,925 euros) and La Mañana (116,009 euros).

According to the “winners” list, the smallest amounts of Catalan taxpayers money went to ABC (5,833 euros), El Mundo (8,712 euros) and La Razón (8,846 euros).

The only real losers in Catalonia were the news outlets written in Occitan language. They did not receive anything.money spent

Why was the Occitan language left without money?

It is surprising that among the list of winners, there is not even one single newspaper in the Occitan language. Among all other things it is strange, because Occitan (Aranés) is also an official language in Catalonia. Perhaps this is the reason why Jornalet , the only serious news outlet in Occitan language, is in financial difficulties although all its publishing activities is carried out totally through expert volunteers.

It sounds unbelievable, but it is true. It is simply one more of the political hypocrisies of the 21st century Catalonia.

Janus.
